💬 A Message from the EAP President:
Thank You, Martin Weber
Â
On behalf of the European Academy of Paediatrics, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks, deepest respect, and sincere appreciation for the remarkable and impactful contributions you have made over so many years.
Â
Your profound knowledge, strategic insights, and tireless dedication to advancing the health and well-being of children across Europe and beyond have been truly invaluable. Your infectious enthusiasm, genuine warmth, exceptional communication skills, and ability to connect people have consistently brought great strength to our initiatives. Your impressive network and your unwavering commitment have time and again been crucial to our shared successes.
Â
It has been both a privilege and a true pleasure to work closely with you over the years — exchanging ideas, shaping visions, and transforming them into tangible actions. We are especially grateful for your leadership and collaboration on joint surveys, scientific publications, and position papers, as well as in organizing and implementing numerous joint workshops at paediatric congresses. Highlights include our most recent successful event at the joint congress of the European Academy of Paediatrics and the European Society of Paediatric Research in Vienna, October 2024, and our advocacy activities at European and national levels, most recently in Berlin in November 2024.
Â
As you now embark on a new chapter of life with greater freedom to shape your days and pursue your passions, we wish you continued happiness, fulfillment, and good health. At the same time, we sincerely hope you will not retreat entirely into retirement but will stay in touch and continue to share your invaluable advice and wisdom with the European paediatric community. We would be delighted to collaborate with you again whenever possible, and I will try to arrange an appointment with your wife to negotiate on how we can get some hours from you.
Â
Once again, our deepest thanks and very best wishes for the future.
Â
Yours truly,
Â

A pivotal moment in advancing child safety policies in Europe.Â
New ways to test high-risk medical devices.
Manufacturers of medical devices need to test their products before being allowed to market them. Specifically, they require clinical data showing their medical device is safe and efficient. In this context, the EU-funded CORE-MD project will translate expert scientific and clinical evidence on study designs for evaluating high-risk medical devices into advice for EU regulators. The project will propose how new trial designs can contribute and suggest ways to aggregate real-world data from medical device registries.
It will also conduct multidisciplinary workshops to propose a hierarchy of levels of evidence from clinical investigations, as well as educational and training objectives for all stakeholders, to build expertise in regulatory science in Europe. CORE–MD will translate expert scientific and clinical evidence on study designs for evaluating high-risk medical devices into advice for EU regulators, to achieve an appropriate balance between innovation, safety, and effectiveness. A unique collaboration between medical associations, regulatory agencies, notified bodies, academic institutions, patients’ groups, and health technology assessment agencies, will systematically review methodologies for the clinical investigation of high-risk medical devices, recommend how new trial designs can contribute, and advise on methods for aggregating real-world data from medical device registries with experience from clinical practice The consortium is led by the European Society of Cardiology and the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, and involves all 33 specialist medical associations that are members of the Biomedical Alliance in Europe.
